We are a military family that lives remotely. Our branch of services does pick up on some medical travel expenses and Tricare (military insurance) picks up many services we have medical referrals for. They pay a certain percentage on what they are billed. For simplifications, I will only show what Tricare has paid out so far to cover certain services (but trust me, what was billed was much higher!!) Living remotely we do not pay cost share/copay on **most services but we do pay it on prescriptions (and some shipping costs for compounded prescriptions) and ABA therapy. There are some providers that Tricare will not cover (DAN! Doc/Naturopathic care and/or certain supplements)... these are considered "out of pocket expense" that we pay on our own.
I originally decided to share this information because of a comment a friend had made. This person was complaining a bunch about how much they had paid for a medical treatment that had brought the results they had wanted. It paled in comparison to what we were paying to treat my own daughter's underlying conditions that is causing her to be ill...that was causing her autism symptoms...and something that was done to her. I am not complaining about the costs at all but I feel it necessary to share because so many families living with autism are going through this! I am so grateful that we have been able to keep up on paying these out of pocket expenses and seeing great results. I am also grateful that our insurance is picking up as much as they are (and sure there are lots of hoops to jump through...but its been worth it so far!!) Not all families going through treatment has insurance coverage like ours either! I just hope this break down is eye opening. If you want to help a family that is living with autism...the best thing you can do is, to help support them directly, with your love, time, or financially. A donation to Autism speaks will never have a trickle down effect to help these families where they need it most, right now...donate it directly to those affected, to help with defraying their healing costs!! Healing is possible!!
